Why I Love VR & 360

While it's true that the incoming Virtual Reality storm will reshape the landscape of every single industry on the planet - I'd argue that the most impactful thing that it will influence, is the human condition. As a black woman in VR, I couldn't be more excited for the opportunity to tell stories from my point of view utilizing the full sensory immersion that putting on a headset provides for an audience. In the mainstream media, it's typical for viewers to empathize with yet another white protagonist - whereas people like me are often portrayed as the marginalized other. For those who haven't ever felt marginalized, being able to fully conceptualize what that's like is extremely difficult. Through the content I create, I hope to transport viewers of all backgrounds into a space that allows them to have the experience where being marginalized is the default.

VR can trick your mind into thinking what you've just witnessed all around you was real, which in theory would make it easier to learn, understand and relate to stories and people who've experienced that reality firsthand. I think it's especially important for people of color to grab hold of this new platform, especially in today's world where so many of us are feeling unheard and discouraged. If through my projects I'm able to empower at least one person to pick up a headset or a 360 camera, I'll be fulfilled.
